Actor and musician Jaden Smith, son of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, has reportedly joined the cast of the Netflix television show The Get Down, a long time project of Baz Luhrmann. This project has been a passion of Luhrmann’s for quite some time, and it looks like he finally gets to see it come to fruition.
The drama will be based in 1970’s New York City. The television show will be about the rise of disco, punk, and hip-hop at this era. It will revolve around a group of South Bronx teenagers who have nothing and no one to care for them. Smith will have a recurring part, playing Marcus “Dizzee” Kipling, an eighteen-year old teenager who is psychedelically talented and an enigmatic graffiti writer.
As an audience, we have known Jaden since he was very young. Not only did he have recurring parts on his parents’ comedy series All of Us, but we have also seen him in the films The Pursuit of Happyness and After Earth alongside his father as well as the re-make of The Karate Kid with Jackie Chan in 2010. Smith hasn’t had a major role in a film or series since the disappointing movie he and his father did together about crash-landing on a deserted Earth a millennium after humanity left the planet.
Among the cast of The Get Down, Jaden Smith is one of the more experienced actors along with Jimmy Smits. The rest of the cast is made up of relative newcomers.
