Staying informed about Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks is important for companies who have a strong online presence. Knowing the signs to look for is important in keeping a website up and operational, but it can be difficult to keep up with. DDoS attacks happen at any given moment and are not easily predicted. It is imperative to never click on links made available through untrusted sources, as this is an easy way for DDoS attack to occur. Watching for reports of DDoS attacks and which companies they are attacking could be an indicator of what type of companies are being targeted. Stay up to date with the newest forms of attacks, how these attacks were able to get into the system, and where the weaknesses were for those websites. In 2013, one could see at the beginning of the year companies within finance, banking and insurance were targeted whereas towards the end of the year media and entertainments sites were attacked. The peak attack bandwidth ranged from 111gbps to 179gbps. Knowing this can help strengthen the protections already put in place and indicates the need so that new precautions can be implemented as necessary.
