It’s obvious that most of the Hollywood movies with high budgets are shot in hope to make exorbitant grosses. Producers invest colossal amounts of money into their flicks: they star Oscar-caliber actors, employ the most recent technologies and special effects. Surely, they risk a lot. However, as a rule their tedious work is paid off in the long run. Below I have made up a list of Hollywood movies that have the highest budget at the moment. So, these are:
#5 The Avengers – $220 million (2012)
This effects-laden action movie tops the list of the most expensive Hollywood flicks ever. Its producers have spent whopping $220 million on it! Just take a look at the incredible cast of the ‘Avengers’: Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L. Jackson, and others. Pre-release audience monitoring has shown that the interest for this superhero flick was incredibly strong, especially among men. Luckily for the filmmakers, this movie had a colossal success and their huge work was paid off: ‘The Avengers’ grossed $1,511,757,910 worldwide, and topped the list of the highest-grossing movies 2012. What’s more, it is the world’s third most successful flick ever.
#4 The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian – $225 million (2008)
A great part of the sum invested in the production of this epic fantasy movie was spent on the special visual effects: ‘The Chronicles’ have over 1,500 special effects shots! American studio had to hire British companies, namely Framestore CFC and the Moving Picture Company to implement the most sophisticated visual effects. The movie grossed $419,665,568 worldwide.
#3 Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest – $225 million (2006)
The second installment of the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ cost $225 million to its creators. Although this adventure fantasy comedy received somewhat mixed reviews (on Rotten Tomatoes it scored 54% with an average 5.9 out of 10), their box office ($1,066,179,725) deserves some credit!
#2 The Dark Knight Rises – $230 million (2012)
This superhero movie by Christopher Nolan featuring DC comics character Batman, boasts one of the highest budgets in the Hollywood history (and also incredible box office of $1,081,041,287). The new installment of the Batman story has reunited the director with many of his past co-workers, including high class special effects supervisors Chris Corbould and Paul Franklin, editor Lee Smith, composer Hans Zimmer, and costume designer Lindy Hemming.
#1 Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince – $250 million (2009)
The sixth installment of the Harry Potter film series tops our list. This movie had an instant commercial success and good reception from critics and public. With its huge gross of $934 million, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince became the 8th most successful movie in the world.
